9 Reasons Why I Prefer my Smartphone over a DSLR

Here are the reasons why I shoot using my smartphone and not a professional camera. Along with the list are 9 of my photos which were shot using my LG V20 smartphone.

1. It is easy to use.

Using my smartphone as a camera is uncomplicated. With a few clicks on my phone’s touchscreen, I am ready to shoot. The functionality is simple and straightforward.

2. It is small and light.

My phone is portable and compact. Carrying it around is not a hassle because it is not heavy. I can put it in my pocket when I am not using it.

3. It is always with me.

I admit, my phone has become a necessity. I carry it with me most, if not all, of the time. This gives me a greater chance of being able to capture a beautiful moment or scene whenever I see one. I can easily take a photo on the spur of the moment.

4. I can effortlessly share my photos.

My phone is primarily a gadget for communication. With its other features, I am able to easily share my photos either online or directly to another phone or gadget. Sharing is also as quick as a click of a button, provided I have good Wi-Fi or mobile data connection.

5. I can edit my photos right away.

I have installed photo editing apps on my smartphone which made it easier for me to enhance my photos whenever and wherever I want without the need of transfering my photos to a computer.

6. I can text, call and surf.

I do not take photos 24/7. My smartphone provides services and features which are not available on a DSLR. With my phone, I am able to communicate to people even when I’m busy with a shoot or I can just play games whenever I feel lazy doing photography.

7. It can shoot in stealth.

My phone allows me to do street photography without being caught. Using my phone, it is possible to take candid shots of people without having to worry about their reaction. People will just think I am texting or playing games on my phone.

8. It does not have bulky accessories.

My phone when used as a camera does not need additional gears, equipment, accessories or extra lenses like DSLRs do.  Although clip-on lenses and tripods are available for smartphones, but these are still handy.

9. It helps improve my skill and creativity.

I am well aware of the limitations of my smartphone in terms of photography but the idea does not discourage me. It even challenges me more to capture beautiful photos despite my phone’s limited capabilities. I believe my phone will somehow make me a better photographer. It pushes me to come up with creative ideas to overcome the limitations and achieve the shot I wanted. In the process, it will hone my artistry and ingenuity.

I may have listed 9 reasons of why I am using a smartphone as a weapon of choice for photography, but I think the list just boils down to one simple point, which is my preference for convenience.

I agree with your 9 reasons. People find it hard to believe that I took the photo and edited with my cell phone (LG V20).
I look forward to learning along side with you.

    1. Just keep on shooting and you’ll improve. Also find time to edit your photos with mobile apps. It take patience and focus and great attention to details when it comes to enhancing your photos. But thanks for the comment. I appreciate it a lot.

  4. I would definitely agree with all these!

I use a very unique smartphone called Panasonic Lumix DMC-CM1

With mobile photography I can get a more perfect shot before having to edit, editing is done using SnapSeed on a tablet

    1. Thank you for the comments. LG V20 is not also common, I only know a few people who own one. I am also using snapseed on my phone to edit my photos.

Maybe someday we can collaborate for a project.

  5. Nine EXCELLENT reasons and 9 EXCELLENT images. You are so right. I am still, however, pretty hard core DSLR user. Although, I still marvel at the iPhone (Or any modern phone camera). This is a topic always worthy of discussion. Love your images here!

  8. Haha! We’re both sporting the LGv20! Awesome! But I mainly use it in blogging (wordpress, analytics, photofy and evernote) as i use stock photos instead of photos I took from my phone. When i was using the same theme you have now (dyad 2), i was using photos from my G3. But due to the change on my site, I can’t supply photos for every post I release… 😅

Anyhow, it’s great knowing another blogger maximizing the use of the LGv20! We should come up with a collaborative review of this beast!

  12. I totally agree! Half of my shots, especially flower closeups I take with my Samsung 5 – 16mp.
Then I edit on the big screen at home. The detail, color and sharpness always amaze me. That said, I never use zoom – its just really bad. So I have a mirrorless Lumix G85 with a 28-280 mm (equiv) lens when I am out purposely hunting for interesting images. I liken my phone to an artist’s sketchpad – easy to doodle with – and helps keep me discovering lighting and composition effects wherever I happen to be.

I am slowly transitionning towards smartphone from DSLR . The problem is that I am a travel writer and it is tough getting a high resolution picture from phone that won’t get bad when transfered to computer.

    1. Yes, I understand. I admit that some smartphone still can’t compete with the quality of photos that DSLR provides, but there are also some phones who are as capable or may give DSLR a run for its money. Maybe you should check some phones currently being released, like LG’s V30 or huawei’s P20. They might provide what you need 😃😃😃 anyways, good luck on your journey towards mobile photography, have fun!
