Playing with Multitude of Colors

In mobile photography, shooting multi-colored subjects compensate for our phone’s limitations. There are times that a photo that has low quality but with vibrant color combination looks more appealing than a sharp and high quality, yet dull and unsaturated photo.

I am not saying that you compromise the quality of your shot, but if your phone can only do so much, might as well experiment with your other options such as finding colorful and interesting subjects.

Vivid colors are attractive. You do not need to be an artist to appreciate colors. In my photos, I actually prefer my colors highly vibrant because they give energy to my image and draw more attention.

Sometimes achieving a good colorful photo is difficult especially when there is poor lighting, but minimal enhancements through mobile editing apps can be our saving grace. Adjusting or tuning the saturation and vibrance can make or break a photo. We should also keep in mind that an oversaturated photo is bad especially when the colors no longer complement.

I personally find it hard to enhance a colorful photo. I think there is a thin line separating a vibrant photo and an oversaturated picture. I usually base my judgement on personal preference. As long as it is not painful to my eyes, I try to increase the photo’s saturation as much as possible.

Just like in low key and high key (click on the links to know more), good lighting is also needed in capturing colors. Natural light is still my best option. I really have no other special tip on how to take a good colorful photo, but my only advice is to trust your eyes. If you see something beautiful and attention-grabbing colors then take your phone out and shoot right away. Do not worry too much on your composition, you can always edit or enhance your photos after.

Color is Life. That is why playing with colors is also a great way to give life to our photos. Try it for yourself, do not be intimidated instead enjoy shooting colors!
